Midface Volume Loss

Midface Volume Loss

It was only until recently that we discovered the face has numerous discrete fat compartments, known as ‘fat pads’.

We now know that these fat pads reduce in volume as we age. This volume loss in combination with the added effects of increased skin laxity results in reduced support in the mid-face. This is often the first noted sign of aging with flattening of the cheeks and falling of the associated tissues. This sagging effect leads to the development of new lines within the midface due to the gravitational effects of the tissues. These diagonal lines develop across the cheeks and termed ‘nasolabial lines or nasolabial folds’.

Dermal filler can be carefully placed in the mid-face at either the cheeks or at the lines themselves. It acts to provide alterative support and volume to the underlying fat and thus provides a gentle lift and more youthful appearance. This is why our clinicians often start at the midface before treating the lower face, as this often improves as a result of the treatment in the midface.
