Skin Pigmentation

Skin pigmentation is a common concern for many of our patients.

There are two main types of pigmentation, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. Hyperpigmentation refers to darkening of the skin and hypopigmentation is lightening of the skin. Both conditions can be distressing for patients and even affect their self-confidence. Pigmentation changes can appear anywhere on the face and body, and fairly common. It may result in the development of small spots, localised areas or larger patches. The causes for pigmentation change in the skin are multifactorial. Genetics and lifestyle factors such as smoking and sun exposure are known to have links to their development. Given the sunny climate of Dubai, sun exposure is a frequent cause of pigmentation changes within the sun exposed areas of the face and body. This accounts for the development of melasma and sun spots.

Pigmentation changes can also result from inflammatory processes within the skin. This is often related to acne, which has much higher prevalence within hot and humid climates such as Dubai. Lower facial acne has also seen a rise since the introduction of mandatory face mask wearing. Inflammation can also develop in relation to poorly controlled eczema, psoriasis or other forms of dermatitis.

Hormones can also play a role in the development of skin pigmentation and typically can occur during pregnancy and in the menopause, thus related to aging.

ZO skin health is medical grade skin care which is used by our doctors for its effectiveness in achieving these great results.
Firstly, treatment is focused on restoring the skin back to good health and calming any inflammation, using a carefully selected skincare regimen. Secondly, by removing damaged skin in superficial layers and encouraging new healthy cells to regenerate, reducing uneven pigmentation and revealing a fresher and more healthy glow. This can be achieved with a combination of medical grade facials, peels and various other cutting edge technologies.
