Chin Implant

The shape of the chin is very important to ensure the facial proportions looked balanced. A small or weak chin is unable to support the jawline and will lack definition of the jaw and neck.

Subtle enhancements can be made with the use of fillers or fat grafting, but for many a chin implant is a relatively quick, simple and permanent way to enhance the shape of the chin.

Chin implants can be used alone, but are also commonly used as part of lower face and neck lift procedures to add greater definition to the chin and jaw, and to enhance the results of face and neck lift surgery. Implants are tailored specifically to the jaw and outcome desired by the patient.

What to Expect on The Day:

The team will welcome you to the clinic and get you settled and relaxed. You will meet the consultant anaesthetist who will discuss the anaesthetic with you. We will go through the procedure and discuss the process and sign the consent form. Photographs will be taken before heading to theatre.

Once in theatre and asleep, Mr West will mark the planned incision underneath your chin. Through the skin incision a pocket is created under the skin to fit the chin implant. The chin implant is gently placed and secured in the correct place with sutures. The skin is closed, and small dressings placed over the wound.

Following surgery you will be transferred to the dedicated recovery area where you will be looked after by our expert staff. Once you are awake and feeling well we will ensure all aftercare is explained and follow up appointments are arranged before letting you leave.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Implants are permanent and don’t need replacing unless there is a specific reason.

There are different types of implants available. The most common types are made from silicone or special types of plastic.

Fillers and fat grafting can be used to achieve subtle changes. For people who have significant underlying problems with their jaw or the alignment of their teeth, surgery to the jaw (orthognathic surgery) might be necessary.

You will be reviewed at about 10 – 14 days to ensure everything is healing well, and scar massage begins at this point. Further review appointment is usually made 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Light activity is ok after 10 days. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for at least 3 weeks. Anything that gets your face red (bending over, heavy lifting) should be avoided in the first 2 weeks.
