Labial Fat Transfer

Labial fat transfer, also known and labial puff or labial fluff, is a surgical procedure that restores volume to the labia majora (outer lips). As women age they naturally lose volume in their labia. In addition, there are certain medical conditions that can accelerate this volume loss such as lichen sclerosus. Replacing volume to the labia can restore a more youthful appearance, and can help with the discomfort sometimes experienced due to the loss of volume.

Fat grafting is a surgical procedure where small volumes of fat are removed by liposuction and then re-injected to a part of the body needing volume. This can be used to restore volume in labia. Due to the regenerative properties of fat, this can also improve scaring and skin quality in conditions like lichen sclerosus.

Frequently asked questions

There is some initial swelling that will resolve over the first week. The fat that is injected needs to develop a blood supply to survive and typically 50 – 70% of the injected fat will survive. This fat is then permanent and will behave like other fat in your body. Any significant changes in weight will have an effect, and as you age the fat will naturally reduce in volume.

Not all the fat injected will remain, therefore it is often necessary to have more than one initial treatment. As we naturally age and lose further volume it may be necessary to have top ups.

Small dressings will be applied to the donor site. Antibiotic ointment is applied to the small labial wounds and then a pad placed in your underwear. We will provide you with spare ones. Very small amounts of spotting can occur.

The area will be uncomfortable after surgery but will settle over the first week. Swelling and bruising is also common but settle quickly.

Wound check after 5 – 7 days. Further review appointment is usually made 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Light activity is ok after 1 -2 weeks. Vigorous exercise, and anything that puts direct pressure on the area should be avoided for 3 – 4 weeks.

Sexual intercourse should be avoided for at least 3 weeks until all the swelling, bruising and tenderness has gone.
