Double Chin

A double chin can appear for two reasons: excess fat or sagging skin beneath the chin. Not all people welcome the appearance of a double chin as it gives the lower face a heavy look. This concern can affect the contouring of the lower face, and if the affected person is older, it may also be accompanied by sagging skin and jowls.

When excess fat is the cause for a double chin, fatty tissue accumulates under the chin and around the neck. This may be due to weight gain, in which case there may be other areas on the body where pockets of excess fat are present.

However, if ageing is the main contributor, it will be sagging skin that results in more skin being exposed in this area. Due to the depletion of collagen and elastin, the skin becomes weak and thin. It loses its ability to spring back, and gravity can help in pulling the skin down. The skin will also provide less support to the underlying structure, and any excess fatty tissue can fall into the pocket that’s been created here.

Tightening the skin is an effective way to minimise the appearance of a double chin. EMFACE is a safe treatment that’s designed to specifically address ageing skin on the face and neck. It is usually applied to the entire face to help lift and tighten the skin, which can impact the skin around the jawline and beneath the chin. Thermage FLX can also be used on the lower face and neck, producing new collagen and tightening sagging skin.

To reduce excess or stubborn fat CoolSculpting has a smaller applicator designed to fit the area under the chin, freezing and destroying the fat cells which are naturally excreted by the body.
