Enlarged / Misshapen Labia
The outer labia (labia majora) is the hair-bearing fatty outer lips whilst the inner labia (labia minora) are the thin supple non-hair bearing folds of skin which protect the introitus (entrance to vagina). The labia minora are filled with blood vessels and become engorged like true lips during sexual activity.
They are charmingly depicted as ‘lotus petals’ in the literature. Labia, come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. There is no right or wrong to Nature. However if there are functional concerns such as chaffing, recurrent infections, discomfort in tight clothing or with activities such as cycling, horse riding or intimacy, then it becomes a concern and surgical intervention may be sought.
Aesthetic dissatisfaction alone may trigger a referral and is not uncommon now that more naked images are readily available for unfavourable comparison. People also self-refer is they note a change in appearance following hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause) or they notice marked asymmetry. Having misshapen, large or asymmetric labia minora can become noticeable when wearing a swimsuit and cause both discomfort and embarrassment
