Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, is one of the most popular and sought -after aesthetic surgery procedures and is a particular area of Rozina’s expertise and interest. A breast augmentation procedure is ideally designed to enhance both breast size, and shape

Breast implants can be used to increase your natural size significantly, add volume to the upper pole and correct sagging by filling the lax skin. Implants are a powerful tool to address breast volume and projection loss associated with age, weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Breast implants are sophisticated devices available in a range of diameters, volumes, and projection . Round or ‘anatomical’ shapes and with smooth or textured (nano, micro, macro) envelopes and multiple layers to ensure against rupture or silicone gel leak.

Breast fat transfer can be used to perform more modest (1-2 cup size) increases in breast size with greater focus on enhancement of breast shape and symmetry. The fat is harvested from areas of excess fat (abdo or thighs) via a liposuction type technique then injected into the breasts through multiple injection sites.

The art of breast augmentation is to select the implant or tissue that gives you the most shapely and functional breast, an implant that fits without tension into your skin envelope and a size that suits your chest wall, physique, and life-style.  The consultation, visualisation of outcome and feel of the implant are therefore vitally important.

Implant surgery is usually a day-care procedure involving a short general anaesthetic. Silicone gel implants require a small incision under the breast crease (inframammary fold) and placement of the implants under the breast gland (subglandular) or the Pectoral muscle (Dual plane) or in reconstructive cases completely under muscle (submuscular).

Frequently asked questions

Be well-informed. Read around the subject, meet with as many doctors as you need to find someone you are comfortable with, someone you trust, someone who understands.

Take advantage of the consultation process – ask as many questions as you need, have as many consultations as required to firmly make up your mind and are committed to the process, not just the day of surgery. Bring along pictures of how you want to look/used to look, that’s a great starting point for discussion. Be realistic, sometimes a single procedure is not sufficient and  a combination of treatments (fat transfer, areola reduction etc) may be required.

Be open and transparent about your medical history and prescribed, over- the- counter  (OTC) and ‘recreational’ medications.

Pre-op investigations such as mammogram or ultrasound may be required. We’ll advise you re compression garments, post-op pillows and anything else you may need

Set aside time for planning, prep and recovery. Surgery is a big psychological and physical stress. Don’t rush yourself. Don’t allow anyone to rush you.

You will be well looked after, protected and kept safe.

The surgery is performed with you lying down flat on your back, with your arms extended out wide.

An incision is made below the breast crease and a pocket developed in which the implant or sizer is inserted. Bleeding is controlled and the pocket is kept clean and dry. The operating table can be electronically controlled to sit you up to ensure correct positioning of the implant .

Once the implant is inserted the tissues are closed in 2-3 layers using dissolving sutures placed under the skin. Little will be visible on the surface. Drains are rarely required.

The wound is then dressed with steristrips, and a waterproof dressing and a surgical bra fitted at the end of the procedure

You can go home a few hours after surgery is completed and you are fully recovered ie up and about, able to eat & drink and have passed urine. You will be provided with appropriate painkillers and antibiotics if you have had implant surgery.

Don’t go home alone, have a friend or family member accompany you and ideally stay with you overnight.

You will be pain-free and comfortable on discharge. Take it easy for the first 24 hours and we will provide information re enhanced recovery and arm movements.

Wear the supportive compression bra, day and night, for the first 3 weeks before stepping down to a soft, non-underwired supportive bra for another 3-6 weeks. The compression garment reduces swelling and significantly aids with pain relief.

Discomfort may last for a few days and most people are back to light work within a week, but not  rigorous  activity such as gym or jogging for 4-6 weeks.

You will be under review and seen at 1 week, 4-6 weeks and again at 3 months.

You will be invited for a clinical and radiological review annually.

The results are immediately obvious. There is some swelling but the size is largely determined by the implant size and position.

Initially the implants sit high, but as the skin stretches and tissues relax, the implants will begin to settle and drop into the lower breast pole at about 6 weeks and will be approximately 80% settled at three months.

Breast Implants are not lifetime devices a 2011 FDA report showed that about 1 in 5 women with silicone implants need some sort of revision procedure within 10 years.

Your breastfeeding capacity is likely to remain untouched by the BA procedure as long as there is no damage to the milk ducts. The inframammary incision preserves the integrity of the periareolar tissues and is unlikely to affect milk production.
