Cellulite is deposits of lumpy fat under the skin, most commonly seen around the buttocks, hips, thighs and stomach.

It appears as dimpling on the skin, most common in women and whilst there is no cure there are treatments to reduce the visibility.

Cellulite is caused by many factors, including age, weight, lifestyle and hormones. Hormones such as Oestrogen impact the production of cellulite which is why it is most common in women. Genetics can also factor if cellulite runs in the family. Pregnancy can cause cellulite to form as hormones are affected. Being overweight and having an inactive lifestyle will also cause cellulite to appear as you allow fat cells to increase in size.

To prevent cellulite you can lead a healthy lifestyle with exercise, minimal smoking and a healthy diet can prevent cellulite. You can get topical medications which thicken the skin, reducing the appearance of cellulite, but this does not get rid of cellulite. Cellulite massage can help as it breaks up the fatty deposits and encourages lymphatic drainage of the fat to flush the toxins out of the body. These will leave the skin firmer and more toned. Combined with exercise and a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of any more cellulite appearing and building muscles, shrinking fat cell, will make the body appear toned and firmer. Staying well hydrated with plenty of water can also help to keep connective tissues healthy.
