Mastopexy Surgery

Breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts.

What is Mastopexy?

Factors such as pregnancy, nursing, weight change, aging and gravity produce changes in the appearance of a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and begin to sag. This operation can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin around the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume after pregnancy, breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both firmness and size.

Who will benefit from Mastopexy?

Ideal candidates for mastopexy are healthy non-smokers at a stable weight with sagging, flat, or elongated breasts. Asymmetry, low nipples, and stretched skin are other qualifiers. Most women who have breastfed children can also benefit. And yes, you can get one no matter the size of your breasts with little breast tissue to start.

Frequently asked questions

Your breasts will be in a higher position, and you may notice a decrease in bra size. Your tissue will be elevated, and your breasts will be slightly smaller because some tissue and skin is removed.

Most breast lift patients are able to head back to an office job after 1 week of recovery. If your work requires lifting anything over 10 pounds, you may need to take up to a month off while you heal. During that time, you’ll also need to avoid lifting small children.

Sensation and breast ductal tissue is preserved in most techniques, so the ability to breastfeed should remain intact. There is a small risk of nerve damage if ducts are severed during surgery. If breastfeeding could be a priority for you in the future, talk with your surgeon about how they avoid this risk.

You’ll need to wear a support bra for several months after your surgery, although the exact amount of time recommended varies from patient to patient.
