Nipple Correction Surgery
Nipple correction surgery is performed to treat inverted or enlarged nipples.
What is Nipple correction?
The technique used depends on the patient. Nipple correction surgery is carried out mostly under local anaesthetic. Inverted nipples are corrected by making a small cut on the outer side of the nipple. Milk ducts are stretched, and the nipple is released from the duct. The nipple is then stitched back into position using a dissolvable suture.
How long does nipple surgery take?
Nipple cosmetic surgeries, including nipple reconstruction surgery, are outpatient procedures that typically take an hour or less. You’ll be able to go home the same day.
What is recovery like?
You’ll be able to return to work in a day or two, but avoid exercise or strenuous activity for at least two weeks. You can expect to have some pain, tenderness, swelling, and numbness immediately after your procedure. This can usually be managed with an over-the-counter pain medication. It can take up to six weeks before the swelling and numbness resolve.
What are the side effects and risks of nipple surgery?
Nipple surgery is considered to be safe, and most people don’t have any major side effects beyond discomfort, swelling, temporary numbness, and bruising
However, your plastic surgeon should explain these potential risks.
Infection: Keeping your nipples clean as they heal will help you reduce the risk of infection
Long-term numbness: Most patients have only a temporary loss of sensation, but if your surgery results in accidental nerve damage, this can be permanent.
Difficulty breastfeeding: It’s very unlikely but still possible for milk ducts to be damaged by nipple surgery. Because of this, it’s wise to wait until after you’re done breastfeeding to have any kind of nipple surgery.
